Online Dating Looks Overseas for Growth

Saturday, August 8th, 2009
Anthony Wayne asked:

As far back as the Paleolithic era, there have been matchmakers. Primitive man probably exchanged their daughters for a good spear or loin cloth at some point. In the middle ages, families exchanged their daughters for labor, land, goods, and even status.

Some know them by the Yiddish term “Shadchen.” And you probably thought the correct term was “Yenta,” but it’s not (I admit I did too). A Yenta is simply a gossipy woman. In almost every society, a community member set himself or herself up as the person to set up unions.

Enter the Internet. In the late 1990′s, online dating began to take market share from the dominant matchmaking tool of the time–newspaper voice personals. The internet could simply do some things better. After all, physical attraction is a big part of the equation and the internet could show a picture, even if the photo was taken ten years or thirty pounds ago.

Today, there are over one thousand internet dating sites in the USA alone. They vary from the highly publicized brands like eHarmony and Match to niche sites like JDate that cater exclusively to Jewish singles–without the Shadchen. Proprieters vary from large companies to entrepreneurial sites run off of entrepreneur’s home office laptops.

The internet dating industry rang up $649 million in sales in 2006, and eclipsed $700 million in 2007, according to Juniper Research. Of the 92 million unmarried adult Americans 18 or older, 16 million have tried online dating, according to the Pew Internet and Social Lifestyle Study. That’s a lot of clicks, or people hoping to click.

Internet dating has been around since the late 1990′s, but it exploded in 2003 with a 77% growth rate. Growth has slowed to 10% recently partly because of competition from the recent phenomenon known as social networking sites. With sites such as Facebook, you can essentially flirt for free. Just like in the Paleolithic era.

In the face of declining growth, online dating brands such as MatchLink, operated by Spark Network Services, are looking overseas for growth. Expanding internationally, however, comes with some cultural challenges. In Japan, for example, it isn’t really necessary to ask for hair color, because there really aren’t too many blondes. Then, there’s cultures like China and India where it’s important to adhere to the local traditions.

International expansion is definitely the way to grow the industry. “We’ve enhanced our offering to include a more international dating database,” said Bob Bentz, director of marketing for Spark. “You really need to think global and act local in today’s online dating world.”

Like with most products, the real jewel for international expansion appears to be China and India. Sixty million internet users are of marrying age in China, according to iResearch, and that market segment alone will grow to 128 million by 2010. Already, 14 million Chinese use online dating, but only 500,000 pay for the service, thus creating a marketplace where advertiser-sponsored services must be the norm.

In India, where up to 90% of all marriages are arranged, local online dating companies are already racking up some impressive numbers. A local site, Shaadi, already boasts having arranged 800,000 marriages. Online dating revenues in India are growing by 50% per year and hit $30 million in 2006.

The growth in China and India prove that when it comes to online dating, love needs no translation.

Dating is a important media for finding a friend or life partner. Though it’s a common name in Internet but it’s contributing a lot. It can solve your match making problem easily. Before it’s area was surrounded by domestically, but now it is extended worldwide. If anybody wants international friendship then he/she has to be member of any international dating media. Suppose you are American, you are looking for European, African or Asian partner then you must find some international dating media.

Though some dating media are advertising in the Internet about their free membership but actually it’s not true. Temporary they can make you free member. According your demand you can mark up some bio data and collect addresses of the candidates. Then you can start communicate with them by telephone, email or chatting. When you are little bit advance try to meet with your partner face to face.

Beware of Scams When Looking for Mail Order Brides

Saturday, August 8th, 2009
There are basically two types of scams when it comes to mail order brides. The first one involves the internet-dating site itself, or the marriage agency, or whatever term they use to describe themselves. Some of these sites are out to get as many men to pay for memberships as possible and then disappear into cyberspace with all the money.

Agency/Website Scams

Many of the women who are listed with these sites will have no idea what the site owner is really up to and are completely innocent of any wrongdoing. On the other hand, these sites often use women who don’t even exist, or who aren’t foreign at all, or who have no idea their picture is on a dating site.

The way to protect yourself against sites like this is to do some research before you decide to sign up with a particular site. Look for reviews, visit forums, and see if you discover other people who have encountered problems with the site in the past.

Other steps you can take include:

• Looking for sites that require a photograph. Without a photo, you have no idea who you might be dealing with. And be leery of pictures in suggestive poses or those wearing provocative clothing. Those are the ones most likely to be trying to get your attention for the wrong reasons.

• Staying away from huge sites with tens of thousands of women, as well as tiny sites with less than 500. You’ll almost always be better off at a mid-size site with 2,000-4,000 hopeful women.

• Find out what ‘extra’ services the agency is charging you for. Your best bet is with a site that charges a flat monthly fee.

• Be sure the profile pictures look like ‘real’ women and be suspicious of a site where all the women are drop-dead gorgeous ‘model’ types.

• Do some research to see if the site has had complaints from previous members.

Individual Scams

The other type of scam you could run into is from the supposed mail order bride herself. Unfortunately, you’re probably more likely to experience this type of scam than the first one. It tends to happen more often on large dating sites, because they’re able to blend in better, and because a large site gives them even more men to target.

The way to protect yourself against this type of scam is to know what to look for so you can recognize when it happens. Now, you should know that the majority of women who are on these international dating sites, or mail order bride sites, are genuinely seeking a marriage minded man and have no intention of scamming them or taking advantage of them in any way.

It’s the few who do that you must guard against.

Once you learn what to look for, it makes it much easier to spot these women who want nothing more from you than the money you’re willing to part with. Generally, they show their hand early in the relationship, but some scammers can be very patient, sometimes waiting several months before they play their hand. They’ve heard the rumors that all Americans are rich, and they just want to find some unsuspecting man who’s willing to share his ‘wealth’.

They know that while $50, $75, or $100 may not be a huge amount to you, for her it may be the equivalent to a week’s pay or more. With the average monthly salary in Russia roughly $640, she only has to find about 10 men willing to give her money to make that much, or even more.

The best advice: Don’t send any money for any reason.

Here are just a few of the ways she may try to make you sympathetic enough to send her money.

1. She tell you she wants to meet you but needs money for airline tickets, a travel visa and/or travel expenses. This is a classic scam that many men have been taken in by.

2. She’ll send you an email saying she can’t pay for translation and ask you to pay for it.

3. You’ll try to buy airline tickets, either for yourself or for her, from a travel agency she recommends and you don’t realize it’s a fake agency.

4. She’s had an accident and needs money – to pay for car repairs, hospital bills, expenses while she’s out of work, etc.

5. She’s lost her job, had to quit school, mother needs an operation…the list and the creativity goes on and on.

The bottom line is, to protect yourself from being scammed, do proper research on a site before you choose one, and don’t send money to a prospective bride for any reason.

Internet Marketing – an Extreme Sport

Wednesday, August 5th, 2009
Jayesh Khandor asked:

hy i consider internet marketing to be an extreme sport ? As it turns out, plenty! I went to a IPL T20 cricket match final in mumbai with my friends and, in between buying outrageously priced food, I thought about what cricket (or any sport) has in common with internet marketing. I know, you may think it’s a bit of a stretch, but these simple analogies will make all of us to consider internet marketing to be an extreme sport.   1.Enter the ground with determination – Let’s start with most apparent. You need to have sheer determination to rich the finish line or score the winnig run. You’ve got to have the same kind of determination to your business and your marketing efforts.   2.Take proper stance and be ready – It takes an intense focus and concentration to hit a 100 mile-per-hour fastball. You must be on you toes, ready to respond, and completely ready for anything that might be hit his way. Are you paying attention in your business? Are you nimble, prepared and ready to react?   3.Give it a real go – It’s not the half-hearted shots that wins you matches, you need to swing hard for that. In your marketing efforts and in your business in general, you’ve got to take big swings. If you want to hit winning runs, you’ve got to swing for the fences!   4.Have a game plan – Just as an australian cricketer may make it look effortless, they never take the field without a game plan. Business, like cricket, is a game of strategy. Plan ahead. Study the competition. Know your strengths and weaknesses. And most important, execute.   5.Team game - No matter how good the individuals in the team are, it’s the team that wins cricket matches. While this is painfully obvious,  you need to ask yourself how teamwork can benefit you. How can you use the combined efforts of your team to win?   6.Life lesson - The players we most admire are the guys who are as great off the field as they are on the field. You’ve got to bring your  “A”  game every day, both in business and in life!   7.Never give up - As they say in cricket “No game is over till the last ball is bowled”, to succeed as an entrepreneur, you’re going to need that same kind of dogged persistence and determination.   8.Be aggressive - Good players always plays agressively. They run hard. They stretch full. They don’t let up. How are you playing in your business? Can you put in even more effort? Can you push a little harder?   9.Use a variety of “weapons” – A champion team uses many different ways to win. They have a variety of weapons in their arsenal. Are you using an assortment of marketing weapons in your business? Look for ways to add some depth to your armoury and don’t rely on just one or two methods.   After considering these nine points, i am sure many readers will agree with me and apply things to their marketing campaign if they haven’t yet.   For more on internet marketing visit www.thebrandsaloon.com
